Student Learning and Development Which grade level did you teach and what did you learn about the development of these students? What techniques did you use to involve students in class, such as using index cards to call on students? What are some strategies that you employed to relate the teaching material to the lives and experiences of your students? All three classes are ninth graders. This lesson has been different from their previous strength training lessons because the students we not using the machines and they were rotating quickly throughout the stations. Like usually first period had little motivation to do the activities and third hour was more energized. Getting the students motivated to work hard and put forth maximum effort for full benefits of the work out was a challenge. However, by relating the stations to everyday life and why it is important to work hard in school, work, home, etc it motivated them that much more.
Teaching Strategies Which types of teaching strategies did you use? Would you modify those strategies in the future? Teams-Tournaments-Games was mainly used because the students were paired up and given a series of competitive activities to do. Most of the time they were working with their partner to reach a goal together. But, sometimes they would compete against them to “win” even though there was not one real winner. I would keep the same strategies for next time because the students made it into their own competition that made the motivation level increase.
Assessment Which types of Assessment did you use? Would you modify in the future? What are some examples of formative and summative assessments you used in the classroom? The students were not assessed on their form of the exercises but more their participation and effort. So throughout the class Mr. Monson and myself were formatively assessing the students seeing how involved they were, teamwork with partner, safety with equipment, and ability to perform exercises at a target level. At the end of class the students were given a summative evaluation of what they learned today, main ideas, and how to explain different exercises. Also, they assessed how Mr. Monson and myself did at explaining the lesson and how we helped them. I think it was good that the students had to construct their own responses because it was good to see what they really did learn and what they thought was important.

What classroom rules and procedures were established in the classroom? What discipline methods did you employ? What kind of bell work did you assign to your students? Telling the students right away that safety is number one; any rough housing will not be tolerated. Two students were getting a little off task so I simply gave them one more chance to be on task and they were respectful and did so. The students were kept very busy which limited time to get in trouble. Safety with the equipment was very important and being under control was key because the students were close together. Ms. Palmer has already enforced safety and being under control, making it easier on us.
